Six Travelers named 2015 Mid-Season All-Stars

Catcher Raywilly Gomez, infielder Brian Hernandez and pitchers Trevor Gott, Chris O'Grady, Nate Smith and Albert Suarez were all named to the 2015 Texas League North All-Star team.

North Little Rock, AR - The Corpus Christi Hooks via the Texas League announced the 2015 All-Star rosters on Monday with six Arkansas Travelers featured on the North squad. Pitchers Chris O'Grady, Nate Smith and Albert Suarez, catcher Raywilly Gomez and infielder Brian Hernandez will play for the Texas League North team at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi on June 30. Former Travelers pitcher Trevor Gott was also selected to the North Team but is currently on the Los Angeles Angels MLB roster.

O'Grady, 25, leads all Travelers pitchers with a 1.63 ERA this season in 22 relief appearances. Over 27.2 innings, the lefty has allowed six runs (five earned) on 20 hits with five walks and 29 strikeouts. Opponents are only hitting .202 against the 6-foot-4, 225-pound O'Grady, fifth-best among relievers in the Texas League. Lefty opponents are 5-for-38 (.132) against the Congers, NY native. O'Grady is tied for the Texas League lead with seven holds and is third amongst relievers with a walks per nine innings ratio of 1.63. O'Grady was selected in the 10th round of the 2012 draft by the Angels out of George Mason University.

Smith, 23, is 5-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 starts for Arkansas. Over a team-high 74.2 innings, the southpaw has allowed 29 runs (26 earned) on 67 hits with 22 walks and 62 strikeouts, second most in the Texas League. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Smith is tied for fourth in the league in wins, first in innings pitched, sixth in ERA, third in WHIP (1.19) and fourth in batting average against amongst starters (.238). Smith has allowed two runs over his last three starts (17.2 IP). The West Chester, OH native has held opponents leading off innings to a .189 batting average. Smith was named a 2014 California League Mid-Season All-Star for Inland Empire. Smith was selected by the Angels in the eighth round of the 2013 draft out of Furman University.

Suarez, 25, who is slated to start for Arkansas tonight in Springdale, ranks fourth in the Texas League with a 2.83 ERA over 70 innings pitched. The San Felix, VZ native is tied for second in the league with six wins. Suarez has only allowed more than two earned runs in three of his 12 starts. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Suarez has a first inning ERA of 0.75 (one ER in 12IP). Opponents leading off innings are hitting .167 off Suarez (11-for-66). Suarez was signed by the Angels in December of 2014.

Gomez, 25, is batting .317 with a .431 on-base percentage in 18 games for Arkansas this season. The Dominican Republic native has reached base in 15 of the 18 games he's played in. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound switch hitter is batting .385 against lefties and is hitting .333 leading off innings and with runners in scoring position. Gomez, who has only caught five games with Arkansas (13 as designated hitter), played in the Diamondbacks system from 2008 to 2014 and was traded to the Phillies in June of 2014 for infielder Ronnie Cedeno. Gomez was signed by the Angles in November of 2014.

Hernandez, 26, leads the Texas League with 46 RBIs, nine more than any other player. The Sylmar, CA native is hitting .258 with three home runs, 11 doubles, 22 runs scored and 20 walks. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Hernandez was both a Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star with the Travelers in 2014, and finished second in the Texas League with a .308 batting average a season ago. Hernandez was selected by the Angels in the 27th round of the 2011 draft out of UC Irvine.

Gott, 22, is still tied for the Texas League lead with eight saves despite not being on the Travelers roster for the last 22 days. Gott was promoted to AAA-Salt Lake on May 24 and then added to the Major League roster by the Angels on Saturday. Gott pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout in his Major League debut on Sunday. The Lexington, KY native went 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 18 relief appearances for Arkansas. The 6-foot, 190-pound Gott held right handed opponents to a .190 batting average (8-for-42). Gott was acquired by the Angels in a trade with San Diego on July 18, 2014. The 22-year-old will not participate in the All-Star Game.

The 79th Texas League All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 with a pregame home run derby and postgame fireworks show to follow.
