Tulsa takes opener against Cards

June 8, 2013

Tulsa, OK - After the 16-inning marathon victory at Hammons Field on Friday night, the Springfield Cardinals fell in the opener against the Tulsa Drillers, 3-0, before 8,213 fans at ONEOK Field in Tulsa on Saturday.

Springfield LHP Tim Cooney (L, 3-3) and Tulsa RHP Tim Gustafson (W, 4-4) alternated two scoreless frames apiece, before the Drillers (29-31) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. With two down, CF Rafael Ortega kept the inning going with a double, and then came in on an RBI base hit by SS Cristhian Adames to lift Tulsa into the 1-0 advantage.

The Drillers added to the lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After RF Delta Cleary, Jr. tripled in the fifth, Gustafson brought him home with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Then in the sixth, with two on and no outs, 3B Jayson Langfels struck with an RBI base hit to pad the lead to three runs.

Cooney finished with a quality start for Springfield (29-30), tossing six innings with just the three runs allowed. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk. However, Gustafson kept the Cards bats at bay, dealing six scoreless frames. After two scoreless innings from RHP Leuris Gomez, RHP Cole White (S, 2) tossed the ninth to close the 3-0 win for the Drillers.
