Fightin Phils Held Hitless By Sea Dogs' Owens In Rain Shortened Home Opener

Portland Sea Dogs left-hander Henry Owens threw a no-hitter in six innings of work as Portland defeated Reading 5-0 in the six inning contest

Fightin Phils starter Jesse Biddle (0-1) struggled out of the game for Reading as Portland Sea Dogs second baseman Mookie Betts hit a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. With two outs after Biddle recorded back-to-back strikeouts, Henry Ramos hit a RBI single to score Carlos Rivero and give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead.  

Sea Dogs starter Henry Owens (1-0) walked Zach Collier with one out in the bottom of the first to give the Fightin Phils their first base runner of the game. Owens struck out Cameron Perkins in the next at-bat then walked Kelly Dugan. With two-runners on and two outs, Owens struck out Tommy Joseph to end the threat. Owens would retire the next 15 batters, seven of them for strikeouts.  

Leading 2-0 in the top of the third inning with two outs, Henry Ramos hit a single to extend the inning. Blake Swihart brought him home with a RBI triple off Biddle to give the Sea Dogs a 3-0 lead. Portland scored another run off Biddle in the top of the fourth inning off as Deven Marrero hit a one out RBI to give the Sea Dogs a 4-0 lead and chase Biddle out of the game. Tyler Knigge entered the game and got Travis Shaw to ground out into a double play with one pitch. Biddle pitched 3 1/3 innings and allow four runs off nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 

Tyler Knigge gave up one run in relief through 2 2/3 innings as Deven Marrero hit a RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to score Mookie Betts and give the Sea Dogs their fifth run of the game. The game would end due to rain through six completed innings. 

The Fightins and Sea Dogs resume play on Friday evening at 7:05 pm as right-hander Severino Gonzalez makes the start for the Fightin Phils. He'll be opposed by right-hander Keith Couch.
