Sea Dogs End Road Trip with 10-1 Loss To Thunder

April 11, 2012
Portland, Maine - The Trenton Thunder (3-3) rode strong starting pitching and timely hitting in its 10-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (1-6) on Wednesday morning at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey.

Trenton starter Schaeffer Hall bounced back from his rough opening day start and retired the Sea Dogs in order to begin the ballgame. The Portland offense mustered two base runners through the first four innings off of the lefty and had nothing to show for them. Hall (1-1) allowed a run to score in the fifth on a Jon Hee sacrifice fly, but rebounded and retired the seven out of the last eight hitters to end his outing.

The Trenton offense backed its pitcher with seven runs of support scored between the fourth and eighth innings. Portland righty Chris Martin took the hill and started hot, retiring the first five hitters he faced. Ronnier Mustelier got to Martin (0-2) first with a leadoff homerun to center in the fourth. The Thunder responded to the Sea Dogs lone run with another in the bottom of the fifth, two in the sixth, and six more in the eighth.

Portland's starter pitched into the fifth before being lifted after he delivered a two out walk in the inning. In his solid outing, Martin gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits, a walk and a strikeout. The tandem of relievers Will Latimer and Michael Lee was tagged for eight earned runs on nine hits in three and one-third innings. Hall finished his day tossing seven innings and allowed just one run, on four hits. The lefty did not walk a batter, struck out three hitters, and finished throwing 70 pitches, 56 of which were strikes.

With the loss, the Sea Dogs finish 1-6 on the seven game road trip to begin the season. Trenton Thunder skipper, and Portland born, Tony Franklin notched his 1,000 career win with the victory.

Prime Motor Group Player of the Game: Oscar Tejeda 2-4, R, SB
