Red Sox Recall Iglesias, Option Tazawa to Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled shortstop Jose Iglesias from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa to Pawtucket. Iglesias will be active for tonight's game against the Athletics at Fenway Park.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Iglesias, 22, is 2-for-6 (.333) in 10 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox last season, which was his second professional campaign in the United States. The right-handed batter has appeared in 22 games for the PawSox this year, going 17-for-85 (.200) with a double, five RBI, eight walks, 10 runs scored and a team-high four stolen bases, including a .300 clip (6-for-20) against left-handed pitchers. A native of Havana, Cuba, he was signed by Boston as an international free agent on September 8, 2009, and is a .253 hitter (178-for-703) with 22 doubles, five triples, one home run and 56 RBI in 193 career minor league games in the Red Sox system. He has been named by Baseball America as the best defensive infielder in the Red Sox farm system following each of the past three seasons and last year was tabbed by the publication as the best defensive shortstop in the International League.

The 25-year-old Tazawa has not allowed a run in five relief appearances with the Red Sox this season with one save, four strikeouts, no walks and five hits allowed over 6.1 innings since his recall from Pawtucket on April 18. He began the season with four scoreless relief appearances for the PawSox, over which he recorded a save and nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Signed by Boston as an international free agent on December 3, 2008, Tazawa is 2-3 with one save and a 5.97 ERA (23 ER/34.2 IP) in 14 career Major League games for the Red Sox, including four starts in 2009.
