Sea Dogs End Skid with 4-3 Win Over New Britain

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs' (8-20) bullpen struck out five late, and the team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (17-11) Friday night, at New Britain Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the fourth, Derrik Gibson led off the frame with a walk and Kolbrin Vitek moved him over with a single. Juan Carlos Linares brought in the first run for the 'Dogs. Oscar Tejeda capped off a three-run fourth inning and put the Sea Dogs out in front for good with a two run homerun off of New Britain starter lefty Logan Darnell.

Ryan Dent reached on an error, moved to third on a balk, and scored on Gibson's RBI ground out to third for Portland's final run. Darnell (3-1) retired the final six hitters of his outing. The lefty finished six innings and allowed all four runs, three earned, on five hits, a walk, and he struck out three.

Chris Martin took the hill for the Sea Dogs in his first start since April 28 at Reading, after he piggybacked with Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday. In the second, Martin (2-2) allowed a run on two hits to the 'Cats and another after a one-out triple by Wilkin Ramirez in the third. The tall righty pitched into the sixth, but turned the game over to the bullpen with one out and two runners on in the frame.

Will Latimer was the first out of the 'pen for Portland. The lefty allowed a single to Deibinson Romero that scored Evan Bigley from second. Latimer induced a 1-6-3 double play to end the jam in the sixth, pitched a perfect seventh, and was lifter with one out and a runner on second in the eighth. Caleb Clay backed up Latimer in the eighth was called upon to pick up a five out save. Clay struck out the first two he faced, two more in the ninth, including the final hitter Mark Dolenc, and earned his second save of the season.

The Sea Dogs continue their brief three-game road trip with the second game of a three game series against the New Britain Rock Cats Saturday evening at 6:35 PM at New Britain Stadium. Portland will send left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez (1-1, 1.69) to the mound. New Britain will counter with righty David Bromberg (0-0, 7.50). The Sea Dogs can be heard on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs radio network with 95.5/95.9 FM WPEI serving as the flagship station.
