Trenton Shuts Out Sea Dogs, 7-0

Portland, Maine - The Trenton Thunder (16-15) put up three runs in the first and cruised to the 7-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (11-22), Thursday night at Waterfront Park. The loss snapped the Sea Dogs' three-game winning streak.

Chris Martin took the hill for Portland and gave up three runs on four bloop hits in the first inning. Melky Mesa got the scoring going with a single to right that plated both Corban Joseph and Luke Murton, and put the Thunder up 2-0. Martin (2-3) allowed another run on Dan Brewer's single that scored Cody Johnson and gave the home team a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

Cody Johnson plated two more in the second with a two-run triple right off of the Portland righty. Leading 5-0 in the fifth, it was Brewer along with Addison Maruszak that drove home another two runs and capped the offensive output for Trenton and extended the lead to 7-0.

Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a double to lead off the game against Trenton's Brett Marshall, but the righty rebounded and retired the next 11 Sea Dogs hitters in a row. Reynaldo Rodriguez reached on a single with two outs in the fourth, but again it was Marshall (4-1) that stymied the Portland bats.

Marshall completed six shutout innings and allowed just two hits. He walked a batter, hit a batter, and struck out four Sea Dogs. The 'Dogs had multiple runners on base in four of out the final five innings, but went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Kelvin Perez, Michael Dubee, and Ryan Flannery each pitched an inning of scoreless relief behind Marshall.

Martin lasted just two innings for Portland and gave up five runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one. Jeremy Kehrt came on in relief and delivered four innings, in which he allowed two runs. Will Latimer closed the game out on the mound with two innings of scoreless relief.

The Sea Dogs continue a seven game road trip on Friday with a 7:05 PM game against the Trenton Thunder from Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey. Left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez (1-2, 1.99) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. Trenton will send righty Graham Stoneburner (0-0, 1.80) to the hill.
