Waldrop Named Midwest League Hitter of the Week

May 29, 2012
Dayton, Ohio - The Dayton Dragons announced today that outfielder Kyle Waldrop has been named the Midwest League Hitter of the Week for the week of May 21st through May 27th. Waldrop is the first Dragons player to be selected for a league-wide award in 2012.

Waldrop played in five games during the week and hit .526 (10-for-19) with two home runs, seven runs batted in, and four runs scored. The two home runs he hit were his first two of the season. The Ft. Myers, Fla. Native compiled a five-game hit streak and had multiple hits in four of the five games in the series against Lansing and West Michigan. The streak was highlighted by a 3-for-4 night on Sunday, where Waldrop's seventh-inning, two-run home run tied the game against the Whitecaps. The Dragons eventually won, 6-3.

Overall this season, Waldrop is hitting .266 with two home runs and 19 RBI. He's tied for the team lead with three triples, and is third on the team with nine doubles. He was voted by the fans as the Dragons Batter of the Month for April. Waldrop has played in 46 of the 52 Dragons games this season, mostly in right field.

A 12th round pick by the Reds in the 2010 MLB Draft, Waldrop was selected as Baseball America's 22nd-best prospect in the Reds organization. Waldrop becomes the first Dragons player to be honored as the league's Hitter of the Week since 2010, when infielder Henry Rodriguez was selected for the week of May 31st - June 7th. Dragons pitchers were twice chosen as the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week last year. Daniel Renken was chosen during the week of June 27th - July 4th and Daniel Corcino was chosen from August 15th through August 22nd.

The Dragons return to Fifth Third Field for a three-game homestand on Wednesday, May 30th. Dayton faces the South Bend Silver Hawks for the second time in 2012, and first at the home of the Dragons. Each game during the series with the Silver Hawks is at 7 p.m. For ticket information, call the Dragons Box Office at (937) 228-2287.
