Germano Pitches Complete Game Gem

June 10, 2012

Justin Germano tossed the first 9-inning complete game by a Pawtucket Red Sox pitcher this season and the PawSox used a 6-run, 7th-inning rally to defeat the Gwinnett Braves, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of 8,625 fans at McCoy Stadium.

Germano allowed just a solo HR to Gwinnett DH Ernesto Mejia leading-off the 2nd-inning and then pitched scoreless ball the remainder of the way yielding just a pair of singles and two walks (with 4 strikeouts) in recording only the second 9-inning CG by a Pawtucket hurler in two seasons. Former PawSox pitcher Matt Fox had a CG 2-hitter in a victory at Gwinnett last August 14.

Germano improved to 7-3 on the year and moved into a tie for the International League in victories with Chris Seddon of Columbus. The 29-year-old righty also lowered his ERA to 2.56 which is 5th best in the league.

The PawSox were blanked on only 4-hits through 6-innings by Gwinnett starter Eric Junge before erupting for 6 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in the bottom of the 7th-inning. Pawtucket used every corner of the McCoy playing field during their rally.

Lars Anderson led off the frame with a single and moved to third on a double inside the 3rd-base bag by Mauro Gomez. After Josh Kroeger was walked intentionally to load the bases, Junge walked Alex Hassan on five pitches to plate the tying run. Nate Spears followed with a bloop single that fell near the left field line just in front of LF Stefan Gartrell. Gomez scored the go-ahead run on the play and Kroeger scampered around to score when Gartrell's throw home got by catcher Shawn McGill. Jon Hee was next and he went the other way deep down the right field line with a 2-run triple just out of the reach of Braves' RF Felix Pie. Hee would eventually score the 6th run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Ryan Kalish.

Gomez, Spears, and Hee all had 2 hits apiece for the PawSox who improved their league-best record to 40-24. The PawSox and Braves play again on Monday night at 7:05 pm at McCoy with RHP Daniel Bard expected to make his second start since being sent down by Boston on June 5.
