Portland Flies Over Squirrels 4-2

RICHMOND, Va. - The Portland Sea Dogs (28-38) snapped a four-game losing streak and doubled up the Richmond Flying Squirrels (32-35) 4-2 Friday night at The Diamond. The win marks the third in franchise history against the Flying Squirrels at The Diamond.

Tied at two heading to the eighth, the 'Dogs strung four singles together with two down and plated two runs to take the lead for good. Reynaldo Rodriguez started the rally with a single and moved to second on an error by the pitcher. Bryce Brentz followed with another single in front of Dan Butler.

Rodriguez scored on the catcher's single to right and put Portland up 3-2. Peter Hissey followed with another single that plated Brentz and upped the lead to 4-2. Both runs came off of Richmond righty Chris Gloor (1-1), who was the first out of the 'pen in relief of starter Justin Fitzgerald.

Chorye Spoone (1-1) had a shutdown bottom of the eighth and Josh Fields locked down his fourth save with a perfect ninth.

The Sea Dogs snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak and jumped on the board with a run in the first inning. Jeremy Hazelbaker drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and remained in scoring position for Juan Carlos Linares. With one out, the right fielder singled to left and plated Hazelbaker.

Down 1-0 in the third, the Flying Squirrels plated a two-out run and tied the game on Daniel Mayora single to center. Richmond took the 2-1 lead in the fourth on Mark Minicozzi's double that plated Ehire Adrianza from second. Both runs were scored against Portland lefty Drake Britton.

Portland tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on Ryan Dent's RBI single that plated newcomer Bryan Johns.

Britton did not factor into the decision, but pitched six solid innings and allowed the two runs on eight hits. For the first time in his Double-A career, Britton did not walk a hitter. He finished his outing striking out the side in the sixth.

The Sea Dogs continue a six game road trip on Saturday with a 6:35 PM game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels from The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. Both teams have not named a starter for tomorrow night's game. The Sea Dogs can be heard on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs radio network with 95.5/95.9 FM WPEI serving as the flagship station.
