Squirrels Down 'Dogs 3-1

June 16, 2012
RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (33-35) hit two home runs in the fifth inning en route to the 3-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (28-39) Saturday night at The Diamond. The Sea Dogs drop to 1-4 on the current six-game road trip.

Richmond jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the third inning on Gary Brown's RBI single to right field off of Chris Martin. The righty was activated off of the disabled list prior to the game and made the spot start for Kevin Boles' squad. Martin (3-4) delivered four strong innings and allowed the run on three hits and a walk. He also struck out four.

The Flying Squirrels struck for two more in the fifth with two solo shots to right off of Marco Duarte. With one down, second baseman Mark Minicozzi hit an opposite field bomb to right and made it 2-0. Two hitters later it was the number nine hitter, Ryan Cavan with a solo shot to right which made it 3-0.

The Sea Dogs were silent to begin the game at the plate due to an unlikely source. Lefty Ari Ronick made his first start of the season and shut down the 'Dogs over four innings. He did not factor into the decision, but allowed just one hit and a walk over the four innings and finished with five strikeouts.

Down 3-0 in the sixth, Portland picked up its lone run on a single by Oscar Tejeda that scored Jeremy Hazelbaker from second. Hazelbaker got the rally going with a walk and stolen base with one out in the frame.

Austin Fleet (1-2) gave up the run, but earned the win with three innings of relief in back of Ronick. Brett Bochy picked up his eighth save of the season pitching the final two innings.
