Homers Lead Cards to 11-6 Win
In the second inning, Springfield scored the first run of the ballgame on a home run to left field by Chris Swauger.
Frisco then got on the board with three runs in the top of the third inning. After a ground-rule double by Leury Garcia, Jurickson Profar hit a bloop double to right field scoring Garcia. Mike Olt then provided power for the RoughRiders with a two-run home run.
Springfield answered in the bottom of the third inning with four runs. Oscar Taveras and Jamie Romak hit back-to-back home runs. Taveras hit a three-run home run and Romak had a solo shot.
Greg Garcia then added a two-run home run for Springfield in fourth inning.
The home run ball continued to guide the offense in the ballgame as Frisco's Jose Felix added a solo shot in the fifth inning. This home run was the sixth of the game and the second for the RoughRiders.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cardinals scored their first run not coming off the home run on an RBI infield single by Jake Shaffer.
Frisco's starter Nick Tepesch (1-1) departed after four and one-thirds innings. He allowed eight runs on 12 hits. The home run ball hurt Tepesch as he gave up four.
Scott McGregor (1-0) started his first ballgame for Springfield this season since being called-up from Palm Beach on June 23. He gave up four runs on five hits through five innings.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Xavier Scruggs hit Springfield's fifth home run of the ballgame with a solo shot putting the Cardinals up 9-4.
Profar scored his second run for the RoughRiders as led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run off Springfield reliever Michael Blazek.
Springfield added insurance runs as Taveras recorded his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Wong. This occurred after a run scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and no outs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Frisco staged a strong comeback attempt. After Springfield reliever Eric Fornataro gave up three straight singles to load the bases with no outs, they could only muster one run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the midst of the offense attack from Springfield, Audry Perez extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the third inning. This hitting streak tied the franchise record.
The Cardinals will conclude their three game series with the Frisco RoughRiders tomorrow night at 6:08pm. Trevor Rosenthal will start for Springfield against Neil Ramirez of Frisco.
Sunday is Ozzie Smith Day at Hammons Field where "The Wizard" will be on hand to throw out the first pitch! 2,500 fans will receive an Ozzie Smith Bobblehead thanks to Maria's Mexican Restaurant and the Springfield Cardinals will be wearing themed jerseys celebrating Ozzie's rookie year in 1978 that will be available for auction during the game benefitting the Ellis Fund. Also, all Sundays are Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sundays where all kids coming into the park receive a free ice cream treat and all kids are invited to run the bases following the game.
