Streak Snapped at 7 in 8-3 Loss

July 3, 2012
Springfield, MO - As hot as hot can be for a baseball team, the Springfield Cardinals were looking to tie a franchise record with their eighth straight win on Tuesday night against the Midland RockHounds at Hammons Field.

The Cardinals sent 20-year-old phenom Carlos Martinez to the mound against lefty Carlos Hernandez making just his second start of the season for Midland.

It did not take Midland much time to plate the game's first run in the first inning as Conner Crumbliss led off the game with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Anthony Aliotti to give the RockHounds a quick 1-0 lead.

Martinez, after allowing the run in the first, settled in to strike out seven batters over four and a third innings before being lifted after a batter reached on an error and allowing a single in the 5th. Jesse Simpson came in an immediately allowed an RBI double to Miles Head making it 2-0. Michael choice followed with an RBI single and Josh Horton delivered a two-run double making it 5-0. A Simpson wild pitch allowed Horton to score all the way from second base to give Midland a 6-0 lead.

In the 6th, Kevin Thomas came in out of the Springfield bullpen and allowed a one out walk before Dusty Coleman hit a two-run homer to right to make it 8-0.

The Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard in the 6th and knocked Hernandez from the game. Just one over the minimum heading into the frame, the lefty allowed a lead-off single to Travis Tartamella before leaving the game after retiring the next batter. James Simmons entered out of the bullpen and allowed a single to Kolten Wong. With two out, Chris Swauger singled home two runs and Jamie Romak followed with an RBI triple to make the score 8-3.

That would be all the Cardinals would get on offense as their winning streak was snapped at seven games with a 8-3 loss to Midland.

Springfield will conclude their three game series with Midland tomorrow night at 5:08pm. Seth Maness will start for Springfield against Gary Daley Jr. of Midland.

The 4th of July will be packed with fun at Hammons Field as the Springfield Cardinals will host "Fireworks at the Field" along with the Urban Districts Alliance and CoxHealth. Between the game and the fireworks spectacular, a concert on the field will take place featuring local band "Members Only".
