Germano Selected to Red Sox Active Roster

July 4, 2012

The Boston Red Sox today selected right-handed pitcher Justin Germano to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. The club also announced that right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game. Germano will be active for today's game against the Athletics in Oakland, wearing No. 47. With the addition of Germano, the Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 40. The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Germano, 29, has gone 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA (28 ER/105.0 IP) and 72 strikeouts compared to just 13 walks in 17 games for Pawtucket this season, including 16 starts. Named a mid-season International League All-Star, the right-hander tops all Triple-A qualifiers in WHIP (0.90) and innings pitched, and ranks among International League leaders in wins (T-1st), ERA (2nd) and opponent batting average (3rd, .211). He has held opponents to two earned runs or less in all but two of his appearances with the PawSox this year and set a season high with 10 strikeouts over 8.0 scoreless innings for the win in his last start on Saturday at Lehigh Valley, a Phillies affiliate. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January, Germano has an 8-20 record with a 5.02 ERA (141 ER/253.0 IP) and 153 strikeouts in 79 career appearances (36 starts) over parts of six Major League seasons with the Padres (2004, 2007-08), Reds (2006) and Indians (2010-11).

Mortensen, 27, posted a 1.69 ERA (2 ER/10.2 IP) in five relief appearances after re-joining the Red Sox for his second stint with the club on June 16. The right-hander has pitched in eight games out of the bullpen overall with the Red Sox this year, tallying a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20.0 IP) and 15 strikeouts. In his 15 games with the PawSox in 2012, Mortensen has gone 4-2 with two saves, a 2.39 ERA (7 ER/26.1 IP) and 24 strikeouts. Acquired by Boston from Colorado in January, he has appeared in 32 Major League games (13 starts) with the Cardinals (2009), Athletics (2009-10), Rockies (2011) and Red Sox (2012), going 4-8 with a 4.46 ERA (57 ER/115.0 IP) and 65 strikeouts, including a 2.70 ERA (14 ER/46.2 IP) in 19 Big League relief appearances.
