Gast takes the sound out of Nashville

Memphis, TN- The Redbirds struck first tacking on four runs in the first two innings as John Gast powered Memphis past Nashville 6-1 on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Earning a team-leading six wins on the season, John Gast (6-2) pitched six strong innings allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

"I felt good tonight," Memphis starter John Gast said. "I've been working on locating my fastballs and that was essentially what I was able to do tonight. It's always nice to get runs early and my team fueled my performance tonight."

Nashville hurler Seth McClung fell to 2-10 on the year scattering five runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in three innings of work.

Corey Patterson smashed a solo home run over the right field wall to get things going in the second, but the 'Birds bounced back adding three runs to their cause. Bryan Anderson got things started with an RBI-single, Adron Chambers connected on an RBI-double and Eugenio Velez recorded an RBI-single to push the lead to 4-1.

'Birds third baseman Zack Cox, who led the team with three hits on the day, smacked a home run to right field in the third and in the third inning, Bryan Anderson, who went 2-for-4, connected on another RBI-single to put the game out of reach for the Sounds, 6-1.

The I-40 Series continues as the Redbirds and Sounds are back in action tomorrow on Friday, July 6, at 7:05 p.m. (CT) at AZP.
