Seven Run Sixth Dooms 'Dogs 9-2

August 10, 2012
ERIE, Pa. - Nick Castellanos broke a tie ballgame with an RBI single as part of the seven-run sixth and helped the Erie SeaWolves (52-66) take down the Portland Sea Dogs (55-64) 9-2 Friday night at Jerry Uht Park. The loss marks the first for the Sea Dogs against the SeaWolves in the 2012 campaign.

Castellanos' base knock against Stolmy Pimentel broke the tie and opened the floodgates for the SeaWolves. Avisail Garcia picked up an RBI single to put the 'Wolves up 4-2, and Rawley Bishop's run scoring single ended the night for Pimentel (4-6) who took the loss.

Chris Martin was the first out of the bullpen and gave up back-to-back run producing base hits, a single to Corey Jones and a two RBI double to the number nine man James McCann which put Erie up 8-2. McCann proceeded to steal third and score the seventh run of the frame on the errant throw down by Christian Vazquez.

Both teams traded two-run homeruns in the early innings to get the game tied in the sixth. Jordan Lennerton put the SeaWolves in front in the first with a two-run homerun to left field. Portland's Travis Shaw followed suit with an opposite field, two-run shot to left in the fourth. The blast marks his first career homerun in Double-A.

Another bright sport for the Sea Dogs was Xander Bogaerts backing up his two-hit debut with two more hits in his second game in Double-A. The shortstop had a single and a double in his second start.

Jared Gayhart gave up the homer to Shaw, but was otherwise outstanding in his second straight start against the Sea Dogs. Gayhart did not factor in the decision, but tossed five and two-thirds, allowed the two runs on six hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out eight.

Tyler Stohr (2-1) picked up the win in relief with an inning and one-third of scoreless relief. Kelvin De La Cruz finished the game on the mound for the SeaWolves with two scoreless innings.

Pimentel pitched five and one-third and struggled once again on the road. The righty allowed seven runs on seven hits, he walked two and struck out five. Martin pitched an inning and two-thirds, and Caleb Clay mopped up the final frame on the mound.
