Newcomers, Bogaerts and Workman, Lead Sea Dogs to 13-2 Win

Portland, Maine- Brandon Workman fired six shutout innings in his Double-A debut and Xander Bogaerts continued his impressive start to his Double-A career as the Portland Sea Dogs (56-65) crushed the Altoona Curve (59-62) 13-2 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have won five straight at Hadlock Field and are 14-4 at home since the All-Star break.

Workman (1-0), who was promoted from Single-A Salem on August 8th, earned the win in his Double-A debut by tossing six shutout innings allowing two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out six. The 23 year-old started his Double-A career off by retiring the first 12 batters he faced. Matt Curry led-off the fifth inning with a single to break-up the perfect start. Former Sea Dog Oscar Tejeda followed with a single of his own. Workman worked out of the two on nobody out jam by retiring the next three batters; a fly out to center, a swinging strikeout, and a pop-up to first. Workman, who turned 24 years-old on Monday was a second round draft pick (57th overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Bogaerts, the number two ranked prospect in the organization by Baseball America went 2-for-4 with an infield single, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. The 19 year-old is the youngest player in the Eastern League. Since joining the Sea Dogs on August 9th, he has appeared in four games hitting at a .421 clip (8-for-19) with two home runs.

The Sea Dogs also got home runs from Marquez Smith and Ronald Bermudez in the route as the Sea Dogs collected 15 hits on the evening.

Smith, 2-for-5, got the Sea Dogs night started with a one out double in the first, advanced to third on a Hazelbaker ground out and scooted home on a Tyler Waldron wild pitch to give the Sea Dogs a quick 1-0 lead.

Portland would chase Waldron from the game in the second inning scoring four times highlighted by a bases loaded double off the bat of Christian Vasquez to score two runs.

Waldron (1-1) suffered the loss lasting just an inning and a third surrendering five runs on five hits.

Bermudez hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot in the third off Nathan Baker, as the Sea Dogs took a 6-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs exploded for five runs with two outs in the fourth as they put the game out of reach with an 11-0 lead. Smith smacked his fifth home run of the year to right field. Jeremy Hazelbaker and Bryce Brentz followed with singles. Travis Shaw picked-up a RBI with a double to right field. Bogaerts capped the inning off with his second Double-A home, a three run bomb that cleared the outfield signage in right-center field.

Hazelbaker went 2-for-4 to celebrate his 25th birthday extending his season-high hit streak to 13 games.

The Portland Sea Dogs will continue their homestand against the Altoona Curve Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. Drake Britton (3-5, 4.02) will be on the mound for Portland and former Sea Dog Kris Johnson (1-1, 2.84) gets the start for the Curve. Wednesday night is also NASCAR Night at the ballpark which will feature cars and drivers from Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.
