Huntzinger Joins PawSox in Georgia

August 29, 2012

The late August promotions to Triple-A continue with right-handed reliever Brock Huntzinger getting his first call-up to Pawtucket. This has been a year of transition for Huntzinger who, after being a starter for his entire pro career, has been pitching out of the Sea Dogs' bullpen since April 27.

The Red Sox third round selection in 2007, Huntzinger struggled over his first four starts this season where, in 15 2/3 innings, he allowed 19 runs (16 earned) without allowing a homer. Reports from Portland were that he wasn't throwing that hard and was replying on two pitches (mainly his fastball and slider).

However, since moving to the 'pen in late April, he has shown increased velocity and improved command. Now throwing in the mid-90s and topping at 94 mph, Huntzinger has gone 4-1, 2.44 ERA as a reliever with 18 walks and 43 strikeouts over 34 appearances. He has not allowed an inherited runner to score all season, is 6-for-8 in save situations, and has nailed down his last four opportunities.

Huntzinger, who was technically added to Pawtucket's roster Tuesday, becomes the third player called-up from Portland over the last five days. Infielder Ryan Dent joined the PawSox on Saturday while outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was assigned to Pawtucket on Monday.
