Despite Loss, PawSox Magic Number is 1

August 31, 2012

The Pawtucket Red Sox fell on Friday night at home to the first place Yankees by a final of 4-3. The good news, however, is that the Syracuse Chiefs topped Lehigh Valley in Allentown 5-2. As a result, the PawSox now have a magic number of one to clinch the Wild Card spot in the Governors' Cup playoffs. Any PawSox win or IronPigs loss over the next three days, does the job.

Danny Valencia hit a two run home run for Pawtucket in the first and Jason Repko tripled home the only othe Pawtucket run in the seventh. For the Yankees, Melky Mesa had a pair of home runs and 3 RBI.

39 year old Ramon Ortiz (13-6) earned the win, pitching seven solid innings. Chris Hernandez (1-4) was charged with the loss. Brock Huntzinger made an impressive Triple A debut. The big right hander struck out 4 in two scoreless innings of relief.

The series continues on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Lefty Justin Thomas (2-1) faces Nelson Figueroa (11-5). Both pitchers will be facing the team they began the season with.
