Lackey and Breslow to Rehab with Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine- Boston Red Sox pitchers John Lackey and Craig Breslow are expected to pitch for the Portland Sea Dogs on Major League rehab assignments. Lackey is scheduled to pitch on Monday, April 22nd when the Sea Dogs host the Binghamton Mets at Hadlock Field at 6:00 PM. Breslow is slated to pitch on Tuesday, April 23rd at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field against Binghamton.

Lackey is recovering from a strained right bicep that forced him out of his first start of the season on April 7th at Toronto after 4.1 innings of work. The right-hander is in his fourth season in the Red Sox organization after spending his first 11 professional seasons in the Angels organization. Lackey, 34 years-old, has a Major League career record of 128-94 with a 4.10 ERA. He was signed by the Red Sox as a free agent in December of 2009. In 61 games with the Red Sox, Lackey has produced a 26-23 record with a 5.26 ERA.

Lackey has tallied both 150 strikeouts and 200.0 innings in a season five times, all since 2003, and is one of just five players to accomplish the feat in that time joining James Shields (6 times), Justin Verlander (6), Felix Hernandez (5), and CC Sabathia (5). Lackey was a 2007 American League All-Star and was part of the Angels World Championship team in 2002.

Breslow was placed on the disabled list on March 31st (retroactive to March 22) with left shoulder tendinitis. The 32 year-old is in his second stint with the Red Sox organization after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 31, 2012 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik. The left-handed pitcher has made 358 career Major League relief appearances over parts of seven seasons in the big leagues with the Padres (2005), Red Sox (2006, 2012), Indians (2008), Twins (2008-2009), Athletics (2009-2011), and the Diamondbacks (2012).

Lackey and Breslow will be the second and third Red Sox players to rehab with the Sea Dogs this season. Shortstop Stephen Drew played for the Sea Dogs April 4th through April 8th.
