Cards 1B Xavier Scruggs named Texas League Player of Week

Springfield, MO - The Texas League announced on Monday that Springfield Cardinals 1B Xavier Scruggs has been named the Texas League Player of the Week for the week of April 29 - May 5. It marks the second consecutive week that a Cardinal has won the award, as LF Mike O'Neill was named Player of the Week last Monday for April 22-28.

Scruggs, 25, compiled a .538 batting average (7-for-13) with four home runs, 10 RBIs and five runs scored through the Cardinals five games on the week. He became the first Cardinal this season to belt multiple homers in one game, knocking two over the wall on April 29 against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, part of a five RBI performance.

The Poway, CA native leads all Cardinals and ranks 2nd in the Texas League in both home runs (9) and RBIs (22) this season. He is also 4th in the league with a .622 slugging percentage.

Scruggs spent the entire 2012 campaign with Springfield, logging 22 home runs with 91 RBIs a season ago. He has registered consecutive seasons with at least 20 home runs and has racked up a total of 93 bombs and 342 RBIs in his six-year professional career.

It is the second career Texas League Player of the Week Award for Scruggs, who collected his first on August 13, 2012. He was selected by St. Louis in the 19th round of the 2008 June Draft out of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas.
