Tides blanked by RailRiders in Monday matinee

Norfolk drops fifth straight
May 27, 2013

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sent 10 men to the plate in a five-run second inning and cruised to an 8-0 win over the Tides in front of 6,156 fans Monday afternoon at Harbor Park.

After a scoreless first inning, the RailRiders collected five hits, a walk and a hit batter against Tides starter Josh Stinson (3-2) in the second frame. Scranton had a 1-0 lead with two outs and the bases loaded in the inning, but Stinson hit Corban Joseph with a 1-2 pitch before back-to-back singles by Thomas Neal and Ziolo Almonte extended the lead to 5-0.

Stinson suffered his first loss in seven home starts after allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander walked four and struck out two as his ERA rose to 4.66.

Scranton starter Chien-Ming Wang (3-4) earned the win after allowing just two hits over seven shutout innings. Wang registered one strikeout and two walks while needing just 83 pitches to navigate his outing. The Taiwanese right-hander took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Luis Exposito reached on a two-out single.

The two clubs will continue their four-game series Tuesday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35. Jair Jurrjens (4-2, 3.14) will take the hill for Norfolk against RailRiders right-hander Brett Marshall (2-3, 6.11).

Notes: With the loss, the Tides have now lost a season-high five games in a row…RailRiders center fielder Melky Mesa made two running catches against the wall in the third inning, denying Luis Exposito and Xavier Avery of extra-base hits…The two hits by the Tides matched a season-low, previously set on April 11 at Durham…Andy Loomis allowed one unearned run over 3.1 innings of relief to lower his ERA to 0.90.
