June 24, 2013

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A six-run rally in the top of the eighth inning propelled the division-rival Iowa Cubs a 6-1 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Monday evening on AutoZone Park.

Iowa's win moved the club back into first place by a full game over the Redbirds in the PCL American Northern Division.

Cubs starter Brooks Raley improved to 6-5, allowing four base hits and a walk over seven shutout innings.

Iowa batted around and plated all six runs in the frame, ending a stretch of 19 straight scoreless innings dating back to the previous two games of the series.

Memphis starter Nick Additon (5-3) was dominating Iowa until issuing a pair of walks to begin the eighth inning and coming away with the hard-luck loss. The left-hander's only hit allowed was a two-out single by Donnie Murphy in the first inning. He then retired the next 19 consecutive Cubs batters and 21 of his 24 batters faced.

In relief of Additon with men on first and second, Victor Marte began by yielding an infield single, He followed by walking home the go-ahead run on an eight-pitch Luis Flores at-bat. Marc Rzepczynski followed Marte in the inning and gave up a sacrifice fly and three base hits to conclude Iowa's scoring.

Outfielder Jamie Romak provided the Redbirds with their lone run with homer to left in the ninth inning. The big fly was Romak's 15th of the season, which moved the slugger into a tie for third place in the league.

In his fourth rehab appearance, Fernando Salas struck out one and worked around a Flores double for a shutout ninth.

The division rivals conclude their series at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. Left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-1, 4.47) will make his first start for Memphis since rejoining the club from St. Louis. Iowa will start right-hander Yoanner Negrin (2-3, 3.79) in the series finale.
