Captains Erase Seven Run Deficit and Win 10-9

(Fort Wayne, IN) - Todd Hankins had three hits including a game winning RBI single in the top of the ninth with two outs, to lead the Captains (18-19) to a 10-9 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (12-24). Lake County was at one point down 8-1 in the ball game and rallied for their biggest comeback win of the season.

In the bottom of the first inning, Fort Wayne took the lead. The TinCaps sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times. The big hit in the inning was a three run homerun from Luis Domoromo, his third of the season. Lake County scored a run in the third inning when Todd Hankins hit a solo homerun to left field, and the score was 5-1 TinCaps.

Fort Wayne scored three runs in the third inning. With two on, Brian Adams hit a triple to right field and the score was 7-1. It became 8-1 when Adams scored on a error committed by the Captains.

Lake County scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the ballgame. The Captains had six hits in the inning. They earned one walk and, used one error to tie the game. Jorge Martinez hit a two run single to begin the inning and then the inning was capped when Zack MacPhee had his second hit of the frame and scored Jeremy Lucas. The game was evened at 8-8.

Fort Wayne took the 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth when the first batter of the inning Brian Adams bunted a single, and reached second on an error. A Sac Bunt got Adams to third base and then Adams scored on a ground out and the score was 9-8. The Captains came right back and tied the game in the sixth. Joe Sever got a bases loaded infield single and the score was tied once again at 9-9. It stayed that way until Hankins took matters into his own hands in the ninth.

RHP Jake Sisco (4-8) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Sisco pitched two and one third innings and allowed nine hits, eight runs, and six earned runs. Sisco walked three and allowed one homerun. The Captains bullpen pitched six and two thirds of one run baseball. The pen allowed just four hits one walk and eight strikeouts. Jack Wagoner (4-5) pitched the final two innings to earn the win.

Fort Wayne sent RHP Walker Wieckel (3-5) to the mound to start the game, and he did not factor into the decision. Weickel pitched four and one third innings and allowed nine hits, eight runs and five were earned. Weickel walked one and struck out three. The TinCaps bullpen pitched four and two thirds innings in relief and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The loss went to Chris Nunn (7-1).

The Captains will be back in action on Wednesday Afternoon in Fort Wayne, IN to take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the second game of four game set. The Captains will start LHP Ryan Merritt (6-9, 3.70) and Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Zach Eflin (5-5, 3.70). First Pitch is at 12:05 PM from Parkview Field.
