Boston Red Sox Recall RHP Rubby De La Rosa

August 3, 2013

The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-hander Rubby De La Rosa from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Pedro Beato was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game. De La Rosa will be available for tonight's game against the Diamondbacks at Fenway Park.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

De La Rosa, 24, joins the Red Sox roster for the second time this season. He did not appear in a game during his previous stint with Boston from June 14-15. The Dominican native was named a 2013 International League All-Star with Pawtucket, where he has gone 3-3 with a 4.23 ERA (36 ER/76.2 IP) and 74 strikeouts. He has given up one or no runs in 15 of his team-high 20 starts this season and his .224 opponent batting average (62-for-277) ranks third among IL pitchers with at least 75.0 innings. In 14 career major league appearances, including 10 starts, with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011-12, he is 4-5 with a 3.96 ERA (27 ER/61.1 IP) and 60 strikeouts. De La Rosa was acquired by Boston from the Dodgers last August in the nine-player trade that sent Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto, and cash considerations to Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old Beato has gone 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA (3 ER/8.2 IP) and four strikeouts in nine relief appearances over three stints with Boston this year. He returns to Pawtucket where he has gone 5-3 with two saves, a 2.18 ERA (10 ER/41.1 IP), 18 walks, and 34 strikeouts in 25 games out of the bullpen with the PawSox this season.
