Kernels blank Peoria 1-0

The Kernels topped the Peoria Chiefs 1-0 on Saturday night in front of 5,039 fans.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels defeated the Peoria Chiefs 1-0 on Saturday night. There was limited offense throughout the game, with both starting pitchers turning out solid performances.

Michael Quesada hit a solo home run to lead off the 3rd and put the Kernels up by a run, 1-0. Quesada's blast was his second home run of the season. The Kernels would never relinquish the advantage.

Josue Montanez proved to be effective on the mound for the Kernels. The left-hander went 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Montanez walked one and struck out two. Brandon Bixler followed and recorded one out before being taken out for Madison Boer, who finished the contest with 2.1 innings. Boer earned his seventh save, striking out two.

Peoria starter Kyle Helisek exited after 7 innings, allowing three hits while walking two and striking out seven. The left-hander threw 105 pitches. Thomas Lee went 1 scoreless and hitless inning in relief.

Neither team produced a player with a multi-hit game.
