FRISCO, TX - Ruben Alaniz, Andrew Robinson and Jonas Dufek held Frisco to four singles Thursday night as Corpus Christi rolled to a 6-2 victory over the RoughRiders at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks (39-27, 81-55) have tied the club record for victories, established when Corpus Christi finished last season 81-59.
Michael Burgess opened the second with a double off Arlett Mavare. Two outs later, Ronny Torreyes served a single to center for a 1-0 Hooks lead.
Torreyes tacked on another run in the fourth with a two-out RBI double to left-center.
Frisco (28-38, 67-69) answered in the home half. Ryan Rua worked a walk and advanced to second on a balk. Tomas Telis sent him home with a smash up the middle. Telis then stole second and tied the game when Ryan Strausborger cracked a base hit into centerfield. Alaniz bounced back to induce a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Alex Claudio entered from the Riders bullpen in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Domingo Santana, Jonathan Meyer and Matt Duffy put Corpus Christi ahead 3-2. A ground ball to the right side by Burgess placed a pair in scoring position with two away. Jio Mier followed with a clutch hit, delivering a single into right field for a three-run advantage.
Jimmy Reyes relieved Claudio (1-4) in the sixth and fanned Luis Alvarez to begin the frame. Torreyes was next and placed an infield hit deep in the hole at shortstop. Luis Sardinas managed to glove the ball but threw wildly to first base, allowing Torreyes to reach second. A ground ball pushed him to third for Enrique Hernandez, who whipped a double into the gap in right-center, staking the Hooks to a 6-2 lead.
Alaniz (8-9) stranded six over his six innings of work. Robinson fashioned a pair of perfect frames and Dufek worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth to end the game.
Corpus Christi shoots for a split of the series Friday night. Nick Tropeano battles rehabbing Texas Ranger Nick Tepesch. First pitch 7:05.
