PawSox Win 80th Game, Now Playoff Bound

September 2, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

ALLENTOWN, PA - The PawSox notched their 80th win of the season in shutout fashion, 4-0, over Lehigh Valley in front of 9,005 fans at Coca-Cola Park Monday afternoon.

A struggle to score runs through the first three innings, the PawSox finally broke through in the 4th against lefty Greg Smith. Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brock Holt each singled to start the frame and moved to second and third after Jonathan Diaz sacrificed. Alex Hassan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 lead.

Pawtucket started knuckleballer Charlie Haeger and he delivered four shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

The Sox added single runs in each the 5th, 6th and 7th innings on RBI single by Jackie Bradley Jr., Drew Sutton and Jonathan Diaz, respectively, to take a 4-0 lead.

Labor Day was all about the pitching for Pawtucket as Haeger as well as four relievers (Alex Wilson, Pedro Beato, Brayan Villarreal and Chris Carpenter) combined to toss their 13th shutout of the season, and second in as many nights against Lehigh Valley. Alex Wilson (3-1) earned the win with a spotless 5th inning.

As a whole, the pitching staff allowed just four base runners on two singles and two walks. They would retire the final 10 batters they faced and 14 of the last 15 that came to the plate.

The PawSox will head into the Governors' Cup Playoffs as the hottest team in the International League having won 19 of their last 23 games. With Rochester defeating Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Norfolk falling to Durham in 10 innings Monday, Pawtucket will match up against the Wild Card winning Red Wings for a best of five series beginning Wednesday at Frontier Field in Rochester.

Pawtucket will return to McCoy Stadium to continue the first round of the Governors' Cup Playoffs Friday, September 6th at 7:05pm. Tickets for all possible 2013 PawSox playoff games at McCoy Stadium are on sale at the Box Office at McCoy.
