Sky Sox Announce Field Renovations

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox announced today that they have begun to renovate the playing surface and field drainage system at Security Service Field. The last renovation of the field took place in 2004 and after ten seasons of use in over 700 baseball games it was time for the surface to be redone. The renovation will maintain a safe and professional surface for Sky Sox players making their way to the Major Leagues and rehab the drainage system to help ensure that during inclement weather the field drains as efficiently as possible reducing game delays.

As part of the renovations, the entire grass playing surface will be removed down to the field substructure and then graded and rebuilt using a five inch layer of sand across the entire field and four different kinds of bluegrass. The infield dirt area will also be replaced using the exact same mix that the Colorado Rockies use at Coors Field in Denver. In addition, much of the below ground drainage system will be dug up and replaced with new piping installed around the majority of the warning track.

The entirety of the project will be completed using Colorado companies with many also having worked extensively with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. GreenOne Industries of Highlands Ranch, CO is the general contractor for the project and is currently working on projects at both Security Service Field and Coors Field. G & S Solutions of La Salle, CO will be providing the infield dirt mix and laser grading the playing surface, a process they are also completing at Coors Field. All of the grass sod will be provided by Graff's Turf Farms of Ft. Morgan, CO. Graff's just finished installing new sod at Coors Field. And finally, C & C Sand and Stone Co., a local Colorado Springs business, will be providing all of the sand used in the project.

"The record level of rainfall last summer exposed some issues with the field that had built up over the years that we felt needed to be addressed so we moved forward with the renovation this Fall to be ready for the Spring," said Sky Sox President & General Manager Tony Ensor.
