Sea Dogs Collect Fourth Straight Win

Welch 3-for-3 with a Double
April 12, 2014

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (6-3) fell behind early, but battled back with a huge inning late and downed the New Britain Rock Cats (3-6) 10-4 Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The win keeps Portland perfect at home marks the fourth in a row.

The Sea Dogs found themselves in a 4-3 hole as they entered the sixth, but took of advantage of a shaky Adrian Salcedo, plated six runs, and took a 9-4 lead into the late innings.

Blake Swihart began the rally with a one out double and Sean Coyle was next to reach when a pitch hit him in the left arm. Mike Brenly stepped in and pulled a single through the hole on the left side that plated both runners and put the 'Dogs in front for good at 5-4.

Salcedo (0-1) continued to struggle and gave up a double to left to Shannon Wilkerson that scored Brenly from first and upped the Portland lead to 6-4. After a Mookie Betts two-bagger made it 7-4, Carlos Rivero capped off the inning against the New Britain righty with a, bases loaded, two-run single to center that scored both Betts and Deven Marrero to make it 9-4 after six.

Mike Augliera started the game for the Sea Dogs and returned to the mound in the seventh, in line and in search of, his first Double-A win. The righty gave up a two-out single, but made quick work of the Rock Cats in his final frame.

Betts capped off the Portland scoring in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Sean Coyle and made it 10-4.

Portland wasted no time, yet again, and jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Stefan Welch started the two out rally with a double to right-center and Carlos Rivero backed him up with a single to right for the first run.

The lead would last until New Britain's four-run third against Portland's starter. Brad Boyer's double to right coupled with Henry Ramos' throwing error plated Matt Koch and Aderling Mejia, which gave New Britain its first lead since the series opener. Daniel Ortiz and Kennys Vargas followed with run producing hits and upped the lead to 4-1.

The Sea Dogs continued to chip away at the deficit and tallied a lone run in the third and fifth innings before the six run sixth.

Augliera (1-1) earned his first Double-A win with the seven-inning performance. He allowed the four runs on eight hits a walk and three strikeouts. Matty Ott and Michael Olmsted backed up the starter with two perfect innings of relief.

New Britain got a great start from righty Matt Summers, before it was spoiled by the bullpen. Summers went the first five innings and scattered the three runs and five hits against him. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats return to Hadlock and square off in the finale of the four-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. The Sea Dogs will send righty Mike McCarthy (0-1, 15.75) to the mound against New Britain's LHP Sean Gilmartin (0-1, 5.40).
