Redbirds Ride Six-Run Rally For 7-1 Win In Nashville

Tyler Lyons Limits Nashville To One Run Over Seven Frames
April 16, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Redbirds starter Tyler Lyons allowed one run over seven strong innings as the Memphis Redbirds topped the division-rival Nashville Sounds, 7-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

Memphis (8-5) has won nine of the last 10 games over its Tennessee rivals dating back to July 5, 2013.

Lyons (2-0) scattered five hits while striking out six over his seven innings, which was the longest outing by a Memphis starter this season.

Randal Grichuk (2-for-3, 3B, BB, SB), Oscar Taveras (1-for-5, R), and Xavier Scruggs (1-for-4) each drove in two runs.

Memphis scored first for the 11th time over its first 13 games, jumping ahead 1-0 in the top of the third. Lyons helped his own cause by working a one-out walk and coming home to score on a Grichuk triple to center.

The Sounds scored their lone run in the fifth, as former Redbirds catcher Matt Pagnozzi (2007-10) hit a game-tying single with two outs to score former Redbirds infielder Eugenio Velez (2012).

Memphis sent 11 batters to the dish during a six-run rally against two Nashville relievers in the eighth inning.. Catcher Audry Perez, who singled twice in the frame, began the rally and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Grichuk. Taveras and Scruggs did further damage with a pair of two-run singles. Perez's second hit of the frame concluded Memphis' scoring.

Memphis relievers David Aardsma and Nick Greenwood each worked a perfect frame to end the game.

Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson limited the Redbirds to one run on three hits on a pair of walks over six innings for Nashville. Former Redbird Michael Blazek (2011-13) took the loss with two runs over one plus innings.

The Redbirds and Sounds continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander and former Memphis Tiger Scott McGregor (0-1, 3.24) takes the hill against Sounds right-hander Hiram Burgos (0-2, 6.00).
