'Dogs streak snapped at six, lose to Mets 5-4 in 10
Binghamton, NY - Binghamton pinch-hitter Kyle Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Mets (10-7) scored a 5-4 walk-off win over the Portland Sea Dogs (12-5) on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The loss snapped a season-high six-game winning streak for the 'Dogs, but they finished the roadtrip at 5-1.
Miguel Celestino (0-1) recorded only one out in the 10th, taking his first loss of the season. Binghamton's 10th inning rally started on a lead off double by Corey Vaughn. Dustin Lawley walked, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Johnson's fly ball was hit to shallow center field, with the play at the plate not close.
Chase Bradford (1-0) tossed two scoreless frames to earn his first win of the season. The B-Mets bullpen worked three scoreless and did not walk a batter over 10 innings.
Binghamton scored in their first turn off Keith Couch (ND). Darrell Ceciliani singled and advanced all the way to third base on a slow-roller to second base by Matt Reynolds. Brian Burgamy knocked home the run with a ground out to third base.
Couch took his first no-decision, leaving the game after six solid innings of work, and earning his first quality start of the season. The right-hander gave up five hits on two runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
The Sea Dogs took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. With one-out, Shannon Wilkerson was hit-by-a-pitch and advanced to third base on a double by Mookie Betts. Deven Marrero tied the game with a groundout and Travis Shaw delivered a two-out RBI single. Binghamton came right back in their half of the third, tying the game on single by Reynolds, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Marrero (2-for-5, 2 RBI) snapped a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning, nailing a single to right field, scoring Wilkerson. In the seventh, Peter Hissey reached on a bunt-single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Betts. Binghamton's Greg Peavey (ND) was solid over seven frames. The righty allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts.
Binghamton closed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh off reliever Nate Reed. Xorge Carillo led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Ceciliani. Reed escaped further damage by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
In the eighth, Reed allowed a solo-homer to Matt Clark (#5) on the first pitch of the inning to tie the game at four. Jose Valdez relieved Reed in the eighth, allowed three hits, but worked out of the inning. Valdez tossed a perfect ninth and finished with two scoreless on three hits and three strikeouts.
The Sea Dogs return home on Friday night to start a seven-game homestand against the Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate). LHP Mickey Pena (1-0, 2.13) kicks of the three-game series, making his fourth start of the season. Trenton counters with LHP Matt Tracy (3-0, 2.20).
