Late Three-Run Rally Propels Memphis To 7-5 Win

Oscar Taveras Extends Hit Streak To 15 Games
May 1, 2014

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - For the second consecutive game, Joey Butler delivered a game-winning two-run single in the eighth inning to send the Memphis Redbirds to a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

Trailing by a run in the eighth, Memphis (13-14) scored three in the eighth inning that began with a game-tying home run by catcher Audry Perez, a line drive solo shot over the Redbirds bullpen in left center. Later in the inning with one out, Butler's game-winning, two-run single scored Kolten Wong (2-for-4, 2 R, BB) and Jermaine Curtis (2-for-3, 2 R).

Driving in a run for his fifth straight game, outfielder Oscar Taveras went 1-for-5 to extend his PCL-leading hitting streak to 15 games. Taveras also became the ninth Redbird in franchise history to hit in 15 consecutive games, with the most recent being recorded by Wong from July 8-30 last season. Stephen Piscotty (2-for-5) also doubled, stole a base, and drove in a pair.

Colorado Springs jumped on the board in the opening inning for the fourth straight game in the series as Drew Garcia (older brother of former Redbirds infielder Greg Garcia) hit the first of two homer in the game, a one-out line drive over the left field wall.

Memphis quickly answered by cashing in a pair of walks for two runs in the next frame. Wong and Butler were walked on five pitches each, Taveras smashed an RBI single to right field for the first run. Piscotty brought home the next run with an infield groundout.

Piscotty extended the lead to 3-1 in the next frame after lining a two-out single to center to score Curtis.

Colorado Springs roughed up Tim Cooney for four runs in the fifth, hitting for the cycle as a team to move ahead at 5-3. Garcia's second long ball of the afternoon - a two-run blast into the Fogelman YMCA parking lot - tied the game at 3-3 after Tim Wheeler worked a one-out walk. The club went ahead later in the inning on a Kyle Park triple, Ben Paulsen single, and Michael McHenry double, which all came with two outs.

The Redbirds trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth as Piscotty led off with a double, stole third base, and scored on a Pete Kozma sacrifice fly.

Lee Stoppelman and Jose Almarante (2-0) kept the Redbirds within one run over the next three innings before Perez tied the game. David Aardsma converted his second save in two days with a scoreless ninth.

Cooney finished the afternoon with five earned runs in five innings for a no-decision. His 11 hits allowed tied a career high for the fifth time.

The Redbirds embark on an eight-game road trip beginning with another four-game series with Colorado Springs at Security Service Field. Right-hander Zach Petrick (0-1, 5.73) will take the mound in the 7:35 pm CT series opener. Baseball returns to AutoZone Park on Saturday May 10, culminating with postgame fireworks.
