Big Inning Downs Rancho against Lancaster

Winning Streak Snapped at Five
May 17, 2014

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - A seven-run fifth inning for Lancaster dropped Rancho Cucamonga for the first time in a week in a 14-7 loss on Friday night. The nine-inning affair took an even four hours.

Through four innings, Rancho Cucamonga (19-23) was cruising. The Quakes had a 6-1 lead behind eight hits and a fantastic outing from Julio Urias. Urias allowed just one run on three hits to go with five strikeouts in four innings.

It all fell apart in the fifth inning. Geoff Brown (1-2, 4.81 ERA) entered the game in relief of Urias, but could not record an out. All seven men he faced reached base. Brown gave up seven runs on five hits, including two home runs. Gustavo Gomez came in to finish off the inning. With the game tied at six, Gomez surrendered a two-run double to Bobby Borchering that gave the JetHawks an 8-6 lead. Eleven men came to the plate in the inning, which started with the Quakes up 6-1.

The Quakes got a run back on an RBI double by Tyler Ogle in the bottom of the fifth, but Lancaster (25-17) scored the final six runs of the game. The JetHawks batted around in the ninth inning against Daniel Tillman, adding five runs to their tally.

Rancho got off to a quick start in the game, jumping out to an early five-run lead. The Quakes scored three runs in the second on RBIs from Aaron Miller, Tyler Ogle and Rob Garvey. With two outs and Ogle on second, Brandon Dixon singled to center field but Teoscar Hernandez threw Ogle out at the plate to end the inning. The hit extended Dixon's hitting streak to 16 games, giving him the longest streak of any California League player in 2014.

Chris Jacobs homered to right-center field in the third inning. The long ball was Jacobs' ninth of the year, and he now has 27 hits in his last 59 at-bats. Rancho got two more runs off of J.D. Osborne (2-1, 10.20) to push their lead to five before the game went downhill for the Quakes.

The Quakes had 14 hits one night after setting a season-high with 16 on Thursday night against Modesto. Eight starters had at least one hit, and five had multi-hit games. The loss drops the Quakes to 11-4 in the month of May.
