Sea Dogs Split Twinbill with B-Mets
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (27-15) and Binghamton Mets (24-17) split a doubleheader Monday night at Hadlock Field. The split brings the season series to 6-4 in favor of the Portland Sea Dogs.
Game 1 Recap
The Binghamton Mets grabbed a 5-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in game one of Monday night's doubleheader. The game featured a one hour and 39 minute rain delay with two outs in the seventh inning.
B-Mets right-hander Hansel Robles (2-2) earned the win, tossing six shutout innings on just six hits. Robles did not issue a walk, fanned two and threw 61 of 90 pitches from strikes.
Henry Owens (4-3) fanned eight batters over four innings, but took the loss for Portland. Owens gave up two hits, walked four and issued two wild pitches. The top-pitching prospect in the Red Sox system fanned six of eight batters on his change-up.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead off Owens in the fourth inning. Matt Clark (2-for-2, HR, 3 RBI, BB, HB) led off with a walk, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Darrell Ceciliani.
Clark would come back to haunt the Sea Dogs again in the fifth inning. Michael Olmsted relieved Owens and a yielded a three-run blast by Clark into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion. Olmsted gave up a season-high 3 runs on 4 hits.
Travis Shaw led Portland with two hits, including his first triple of the season. Shannon Wilkerson added a double in the third. Derrik Gibson went 1-for-2 and has reached base safely in 20 of 22 games.
Game 2 Recap
The Portland Sea Dogs bounced back in a big way and downed the Binghamton Mets 8-2 in game two of the doubleheader, Monday night at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs wasted no time and jumped all over the B-Mets starter Angel Cuan for two runs in the first inning. Deven Marrero got the scoring going with an infield single; he then stole second and third, and came around to score on the throwing error by the catcher on the throw down to third. Stefan Welch, Henry Ramos, and Heiker Meneses followed the first run with three straight singles, the latter of which scored Welch and doubled the 'Dogs lead to 2-0.
Cuan (0-1) faired no better in the next three frames as Portland went on to score six more runs against the southpaw making his first appearance of the season. Back-to-back doubles by Mookie Betts and Marrero made is 3-0 in the third.
In the fourth two straight singles by Welch and Ramos began the inning and a walk to Derrik Gibson filled the bases for Mike Brenly. The catcher, fresh off the disabled list, took the first pitch from Cuan and put it over the Maine Monster for a grand slam, which gave Portland the 7-0 lead. The blast was the first career grand slam and a career-high four RBI in one game for the catcher.
Travis Shaw capped off the scoring for the Sea Dogs in the fourth with a solo blast into the Portland bullpen in right, his eighth of the season, and made it 8-1.
The B-Mets came got on the board against Portland's starter Mike McCarthy in the fourth. The righty maneuvered his way through the first three innings with only a hit and two free passes on his resume. A two out single in the fourth by Travis Taijeron scored Matt Clark from third for the Mets' first run.
McCarthy (3-2) settled down and finished six innings allowing the one run on four hits; he walked three, hit two batters, and tallied five strikeouts. Miguel Celestino came on for the seventh and final frame. The hard-throwing righty gave up an RBI single to Jayce Boyd, but that was all he would allow, as he locked down the win in the nightcap.
The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets continue their six-game series on Tuesday night with a lone game at Hadlock Field beginning at 6:00 PM. LHP Brian Johnson (2-0, 2.20) gets the nod for Portland against LHP Darin Gorski (3-1, 2.79) of the Mets.
