Goris Slam Sparks Storm Win

Rea shines and Renfroe goes yard in 6-3 victory
May 25, 2014

Lake Elsinore, CA - Storm shortstop Diego Goris provided all the power Lake Elsinore would need Saturday night, blasting a fifth inning grand slam that spurred the Eyes to a 6-3 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Both starting pitchers impressed through the first four innings. Colin Rea (W, 5-2) kept the Quakes off the board while Fabio Martinez (L, 2-3) retired nine consecutive hitters to start the game.

The Storm solved Martinez the second time through the order. Luis Domoromo led off the fifth with a double, followed by a Gabriel Quintana walk. Benji Gonzalez loaded the bases with an infield single, but Corey Adamson could only muster a ground ball that eliminated Domoromo at the plate. Unfazed, Goris hammered a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for the first Storm grand slam this season to give Lake Elsinore a 4-0 advantage.

Another Storm run would score in the sixth. Hunter Renfroe singled and moved to second on Domoromo's second hit of the game. A wild pitch and a throwing error allowed Renfroe to score from second in the next at-bat to pad the Storm lead.

Rea cruised through the remainder of his outing and finished with six scoreless innings. The Cascade, IA native scattered five hits and struck out five without walking a batter.

A three-run home run in Rancho's half of the seventh cut into Lake Elsinore's lead, but Renfroe responded in the eighth with his tenth home run of the season to put the Storm up 6-3.

Trevor Gott worked a perfect ninth to record his league-leading fourteenth save of the season, securing Lake Elsinore's thirtieth win of 2014.

Goris' slam highlighted a three-hit night for the 23-year old infielder, who is now batting a team-high .320. Renfroe and Domoromo had two hits each.

The victory puts the Storm (30-20) ten games above .500 and solidifies a two-game lead in the California League South with twenty games left to play. Bakersfield is the only other team in the league with thirty or more wins.

Bryce Morrow (1-0, 3.33 ERA) will make his second start of the season in game three of the four game set tomorrow, while Chris Anderson (2-4, 5.52 ERA) gets the ball for Rancho Cucamonga (23-27). First pitch is set for 2:05pm.
