Quakes Lose Another Close One

Rancho gives up three homers, loses by a run in High Desert
May 27, 2014

Adelanto, CA - Rancho Cucamonga left 11 men on base and gave up a trio of home runs in a 5-4 loss to High Desert on Tuesday afternoon. The Quakes had a pair of long balls, but were kept off the scoreboard in the final six innings in the loss.

Rancho Cucamonga (23-30) scored first with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Adam Law, who was playing in his first game since May 15, drew a walk to open the game. Brandon Dixon, the next batter, hit his second home run in as many games to give the Quakes a 2-0 lead.

The Quakes added another run in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk in the third inning by Adam Law. However, the Quakes couldn't strike again despite loading the bases with nobody out.

High Desert (28-25) got to Rancho starter Jharel Cotton (0-3, 6.91) in the fourth inning on a pair of two-run shots. Tyler Smith and Burt Reynolds each took Cotton deep to give the Mavs a 4-3 lead. Outside of that frame, Cotton only allowed two hits in five innings.

Rancho answered with a home run from Aaron Miller to tie the game at four in the top of the third inning. The long ball was Miller's third of the season. That was the last time the Quakes scored in the contest.

Rancho wasn't able to capitalize on opportunities Tuesday, as they left 11 men on base and were just 1-for-9 with men in scoring position.

High Desert made Rancho pay with a third home run to lead off the sixth inning. D.J. Peterson launched his ninth homer of the year to left field, giving the Mavs a 5-4 lead. They would go on to win by that score, and the Quakes are now just 4-12 in one-run affairs.

The series continues on Wednesday night at Heritage Field with Rancho looking to stop a five-game skid. Lefty Tom Windle (4-3, 4.62) goes for the Quakes against Tyler Pike (2-2, 5.57) for the Mavericks.
