Red Sox Recall Alex Wilson, Buchholz to DL

The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to yesterday) due to a hyperextended left knee.   To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wilson will be active for tonight's game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Buchholz, 29, last pitched on Monday in Atlanta and allowed six runs in a 3.0-inning start. In 10 starts this season, he is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA (39 ER/50.0 IP) and 39 strikeouts. Last season, his first All-Star campaign, he posted a 12-1 record with a 1.74 ERA in 16 regular season starts, and also started four games during Boston's postseason run to the World Series title. Buchholz is 60-37 with a 3.82 ERA (337 ER/794.2 IP) and 606 strikeouts in 133 career major league games, including 131 starts, over eight major league seasons, all with Boston.

Wilson, 27, returns to the Red Sox for his third major league stint of 2014. His only appearance for Boston thus far in 2014 was a 1.0-inning relief outing against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday at Tropicana Field. With Pawtucket this season, he is 1-0 with five saves, and a 1.42 ERA (3 ER/19.0 IP) in 18 appearances, all in relief. He has held opponents to a .182 (12-for-66) batting average and is averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings (21 SO/19.0 IP) with the PawSox. Last year, Wilson made his major league debut with 26 games over three stints with the Red Sox, going 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts compared to 14 walks.
