Adelanto, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm began the final series of the first half with a 12-8 victory Wednesday night, winning the first of four with the High Desert Mavericks.
High Desert got on the board first, striking for one run in the opening frame off of Storm starter Bryan Rodriguez (W, 2-4). The San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic native worked five innings, allowing ten hits and six earned runs.
After a scoreless second, Lake Elsinore answered in a big way to begin the third. Luis Domoromo started the inning with a single, and a Benji Gonzalez double put two men in scoring position with no outs. Two batters later, Alberth Martinez doubled home Domoromo and Gonzalez to give the Storm the lead. Diego Goris followed with his eleventh home run of the season, and Hunter Renfroe drove a double to left no sooner than Goris could return to the dugout. Jeremy Baltz capped the inning with his first home run of 2014, a two-run shot to left that made it 6-1.
The Mavs scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but Lake Elsinore's offensive momentum carried into the fourth. Gonzalez's second double of the game came with one out, and after Corey Adamson walked a wild pitch sent the runners to second and third. A second consecutive free pass was issued to Martinez, and Goris cashed in with a bases-clearing double. Renfroe deposited his league-leading 16th dinger of the season over the left centerfield wall to put the Storm up 11-2.
Roman Madrid, Adam Cimber and Trevor Gott combined to cover the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six, and the offense added an insurance run in the sixth to win 12-8.
Goris finished the game 2-6 with five RBI. Renfroe extended his team-leading hit streak to eleven with his third inning double, and Baltz has now collected a hit in nine straight games. Rodriguez has won two straight games for the first time this season.
