June 30, 2014

The International League announced today that Pawtucket infielder Carlos Rivero and Columbus pitcher Travis Banwart have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 23‐29. Rivero is the first member of the PawSox to claim an IL weekly award this season, while Banwart becomes the third Columbus player to be so honored (Josh Tomlin, April 28‐May 4; Matt Carson, May 5‐11).

Rivero hit safely in all seven games last week (pushing his overall streak to nine), and heʹs also scored a run in each of the past six contests. Rivero and the PawSox have now climbed to three games over .500 and are within just 2.0 games of the top spot in the Leagueʹs Wild Card standings.

26‐year‐old Carlos Rivero is in his first season in the Boston organization after signing as a free agent this past December. He was an International League All‐Star in his first full season at the Triple‐A level in 2012 with Syracuse. He has yet to make his Major League debut. TRAVIS BANWART, Columbus Clippers - IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Columbus right‐hander Travis Banwart allowed just one earned run over 13.0 innings pitched in a pair of outings last week while leading the International League with 15 strikeouts. He punched out a season‐best nine last Monday at Lehigh Valley in 6.0 innings of work, surrendering five hits and two runs (one earned). He earned no decision after he departed with the game tied 2‐2, though the Clippers ultimately prevailed 7‐4. Sunday evening in Toledo, Banwart tossed the first 7.0 frames of a 4‐0 shutout of the Mud Hens. The victory improved his record on the season to 5‐2 with a 3.12 ERA.
