Lombardozzi lifts Tides to walk-off win

Tides snap three-game losing skid
July 2, 2014

Norfolk, VA - Steve Lombardozzi's bases loaded single in the tenth inning lifted the Tides to an 8-7, walk-off win over the Charlotte Knights Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

With the score knotted at 7-7, Steve Clevenger opened the decisive frame by working a four-pitch walk from Henry Rodriguez (0-1), who was making his first appearance in a Charlotte uniform. Rodriguez then walked Xavier Paul and followed by uncorking a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Rodriguez walked Cord Phelps to load the bases, and Lombardozzi followed by lining a 3-1 pitch down the first base line, scoring pinch-runner Julio Borbon and giving Norfolk the walk-off win.

The win improved Norfolk to 7-3 in extra-inning games this season and snapped a three-game losing skid. It was also the fourth walk-off victory of the year for the Tides and made a winner out of Clay Rapada (1-0).

Making his first start for Charlotte, former Tide Daniel McCutchen was perfect through three innings before the Tides finally got to him in the fourth. Norfolk sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth frame, as the Tides collected three walks, four singles and a two-run double by Phelps to score six runs and take a 6-1 lead.

Charlotte chipped away against Norfolk starter Mike Wright with a run in the fifth, then plated four runs in the sixth inning to chase Wright from the contest and even the score at 6-6. Wright allowed six runs on a career-high 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work, striking out two without walking a batter.

Norfolk took a brief 7-6 lead on a sacrifice fly by Buck Britton in the sixth inning, but Charlotte tied it again in the seventh on an RBI single by Matt Tuiasosopo.

The two clubs will wrap up their two-game set on Thursday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Right-hander Tyler Wilson will make his Triple-A debut for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Erik Johnson (2-5, 6.72). Thursday night's contest will also feature a postgame fireworks extravaganza.
