Zephyrs Close Out Series with 10-8 Win

RedHawks finish their homestand with a 3-4 record

Oklahoma City - The New Orleans Zephyrs hung on to win a high-scoring, back-and-forth game, 10-8, Thursday against the Oklahoma City RedHawks in front of a crowd of 5,157 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark to close out the season series between the teams.

Zephyrs catcher Kyle Skipworth finished with a game-high four RBI and RedHawks infielder Ronny Torreyes posted a game-high four hits, along with three RBI, as the teams combined for 26 hits.

New Orleans (47-47) won the four-game series, 3-1, but the RedHawks won the season series, 9-7.

Thursday's game lasted 3 hours, 38 minutes, marking the longest nine-inning game of the season for the RedHawks (48-47).

The scoring started quickly Thursday.

A solo home run by Jordany Valdespin in the first inning landed on the Devon Energy Deck in right field to give New Orleans a 1-0 lead.

Torreyes got on base with a single in the bottom of the frame. He stole second base then advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on a wild pitch by Zephyrs starting pitcher Elih Villanueva. Domingo Santana and Preston Tucker hit back-to-back doubles and Santana scored on Tucker's hit to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

The Zephyrs took the lead again on a two-run double by Juan Diaz in the top of the second. Jake Marisnick connected on the third double of the inning for New Orleans and scored Juan Diaz for a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the RedHawks loaded the bases on a bunt grounder by Joe Sclafani. Torreyes hit a triple down the right field line to bring home three runs and give Oklahoma City a 5-4 lead. Marc Krauss followed and hit a RBI single for the fourth run of the inning for the RedHawks and a 6-4 advantage.

New Orleans then added four runs in the third and fourth innings combined. A three-run homer by Skipworth put the Zephyrs back in front, 7-6, and they added another run on a RBI single by Kyle Jensen for an 8-6 advantage in the fourth inning.

A RBI single by Krauss in the bottom of the fourth inning cut the lead to 8-7.

Marisnick hit a RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning for a 9-7 New Orleans lead.

Krauss drove in his third run of the night on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Zephyrs lead to 9-8.

In the top of the ninth, New Orleans added a run on a RBI double by Skipworth for a 10-8 edge.

RedHawks starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski (0-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits over 3.2 innings.

Zephyrs reliever Edgar Olmos (1-1) earned the win and Arquimedes Caminero recorded his third save of the season.

The RedHawks finished their homestand with a 3-4 record.

The RedHawks next travel for a four-game series in three days against the Iowa Cubs. The series opens with a 7:05 p.m. game Friday at Principal Park.
