Rainiers Walk-Off With Win Over Fresno

Almonte's single in the 10th seals victory in series opener
July 12, 2014

TACOMA, Wash. -- Abraham Almonte's single in the 10th inning led the Tacoma Rainiers to a 3-2 walk-off win over the Fresno Grizzlies at Cheney Stadium on Friday.

With the score knotted at 2-2, Tacoma infielder Gabriel Noriega led off the bottom of the tenth with a single, shifted to second base on Leury Bonilla's sac bunt and then moved to third on a Xavier Avery ground out. The outfielder Almonte drove in Noriega for the game-winning run after lining a single in the team's next at-bat.

Tacoma held a lead as large as 2-0 through the game's first two innings. Stefen Romero gave the Rainiers a 1-0 edge after hitting a sacrifice fly that plated Almonte in the first, and Humberto Quintero doubled the lead and stretched his hitting streak to six games after delivering an RBI double in the second.

Fresno evened things when they tallied runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Former Rainiers catcher Guillermo Quiroz cut Tacoma's lead in half with an RBI ground out, and Tony Abreu tied things with a solo home run one inning later.

Right-hander Carson Smith (1-2) collected the win after holding the Grizzlies to one hit in a scoreless inning of work in the 10th. He and fellow relievers Stephen Kohlscheen (1.0) and Todd Coffey (1.0) combined to toss 3.0 shutout frames of work from the bullpen.

Starter Erasmo Ramirez limited Fresno to two runs - one earned - on three hits in 7.0 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked two in his eighth start with Tacoma this season.

The Rainiers (45-49) host the second installment of the team's three-game set with Fresno (46-50) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 12. Right-hander Taijuan Walker (2-1, 4.11) is expected to start for Tacoma against Grizzlies right-hander Chris Heston (7-4, 3.70).
