Cotton Named Pitcher of the Week

Third time this year a Quake has won the award
July 30, 2014

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - On Monday, Quakes righty Jharel Cotton was named Pitcher of the Week in the California League for his July 22 performance in Bakersfield. He became the fifth Quake overall and the second pitcher to win a weekly award.

Cotton was dominant against the Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark on July 22, giving up just one hit over seven scoreless innings while striking out nine batters. He becomes the second Quake hurler to be named Pitcher of the Week in 2014 after Lindsey Caughel took home a pair of awards early in the Second Half.

The Rancho righty could be in line for another award after his performance a week later. On Tuesday against the Storm, Cotton tossed the second complete game shutout in the Cal League this season. He struck out a career-high 11 while giving up just two hits and two walks. The shutout was the first for a Quakes pitcher since Red Patterson pitched one against Bakersfield on August 25, 2011.

In his last two outings, Cotton has given up only three hits in 16 innings while striking out 20 and walking five batters. The Virgin Islands native is slated to start for the Quakes on Sunday in the series finale against Bakersfield.
