August 5, 2014

Bowie, MD - The Portland Sea Dogs (73-44) scored two runs in the 11th inning, and took the opener of their six-game roadtrip, 3-1 over the Bowie Baysox (57-59) on Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium.

Sean Coyle (1-for-3, 2 BB) knocked home the game-winning run, delivering a run-scoring double with nobody out in the 11th, scoring Stefan Welch. Welch went 2-for-2, replacing MLB Rehabber Kelly Johnson (0-for-3). Johnson played seven innings at first base, making his debut in the Red Sox system. David Chester added the icing on the cake, nailing an RBI single off losing pitcher Marcel Prado (5-3) for the game's final run.

Robby Scott (7-2) allowed a hit to the first batter faced, but retired the final six to earn the win for Portland. Scott tied a season-high with four strikeouts, and threw 22 of 33 pitches for strikes.

Brian Johnson was outstanding for Portland, tossing eight scoreless frames on three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Johnson faced the minimum of 24 batters, inducing 3 double plays, and lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.89. The eight innings established a new carrer-high for the lefty, who has allowed just one earned run in his last 28.1 IP.

The scoreless game was snapped courtesy of Jonathan Roof in the fifth inning. With one out, Keury De La Cruz doubled off Tim Berry, and scored on Roof's two-out double. Berry did not factor in the decision, giving up just three hits and one run over 6 IP for Bowie.

Portland had a chance for their second 1-0 win, but the Baysox scored a run in the ninth off Noe Ramirez. Michael Ohlman led off the inning with a single and pinch-hitter Sharlon Schoop was hit by a pitch. Glynn Davis moved up the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Mike Yastrzemski tied the game with a run-scoring groundout.

The Sea Dogs improved to 6-1 in extra-innings, and reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 10.
