CATS PLAYOFF HOPES END IN TEN-INNING AFFAIR

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats (79-65) season came to an end on Monday afternoon as they fell to the Reno Aces (81-63) by a score of 2-1 in ten innings at Raley Field, failing to make the playoffs for the second-consecutive season. Reno advances to their second playoff berth in the last three years and will play the Las Vegas 51s in a five-game series in the Pacific Conference Championship starting Wednesday in Las Vegas.

It took four-plus innings before a run was scored on Monday afternoon, but Reno finally broke through with a run in the fifth inning. Right fielder Roger Kieschnick hit a two-out double to right field and then scored on catcher Blake Lalli's RBI-single that just escaped a diving Shane Peterson in left field, giving the Aces a 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Peterson led off with a double to right-center field and because of two Reno errors advanced to third and eventually home to tie the game at one run apiece.

Michael Freeman pinch-hit for Brett Jackson to start the tenth innings and doubled to right field off of Jeremy McBryde. McBryde was able to record back-to-back outs before Nick Ahmed came to the plate. With two strikes and two outs, Ahmed hit a bloop-single to center field, scoring Freeman from second and giving the Aces a 2-1 lead.

The River Cats had an opportunity in tenth inning to do some damage with runners on first and second with one out, but an inning-ending double play by Daric Barton ended the threat and the game.

Sacramento right-handed starter Arnold Leon (10-7, 4.97 ERA) pitched admirably in the regular-season finale, giving up just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three in a no-decision. Seth Frankoff and Phil Humber each pitched a shutout inning with a strikeout while McBryde took the loss after tossing two innings and yielding one run on two hits to go with one strikeout.

Peterson ended the game 2-for-4 with a run and Barton finished 1-for-3 with two walks for the River Cats.

Reno righty Charles Brewer (8-10, 4.99 ERA) held the River Cats scoreless over six strong innings while allowing just five hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Kevin Munson earned the win after hurling 1.1 scoreless innings and Jake Barrett received his 16th save of the season with a scoreless 10th.

Ahmed finished 2-for-5 with the game-winning RBI and Kieschnick went 1-for-3 with a double, a run, and a walk.

The River Cats finished 2014 with their twelfth-consecutive winning season and 14th winning season in franchise history. Sacramento also led the Pacific Coast league in average attendance (8,578) and total attendance (617,627) for the second-straight season.
