Q&A: Jesse Biddle Looks to Rebound in 2015

Pitching prospect searching for "comfort zone" in Spring Training
March 17, 2015

Fightin Phils radio broadcaster Mike Ventola is in Clearwater, Florida for Phillies Spring Training. Over his time in the Sunshine State, Ventola will sit down with Fightins alums and coaches and talk to them about their spring training goals for 2015. Today, Ventola sits with 2013-14 pitcher Jesse Biddle as he readies for 2015.

How was your offseason?

My offseason was great! I was fortunate enough to play in Puerto Rico for a month for Mayaguez. I had a great time. Unfortunately, I got hurt and I really wanted to help the team win some games. I learned a lot over there and it was nice to get some innings underneath my belt.

What specific goal are you looking to accomplish while you're here in Clearwater?

I am looking to find my comfort zone. I'm working on a couple of things such as fastball command first and foremost. I'm not trying to overhaul anything or change things up too much. I want to find my comfort zone and find where I need to be to get the season started.

Have you had a chance to sit back and take in the atmosphere here at spring training?

I guess so. I try to not put too much pressure on the situation. I mean, I'm playing with guys such as Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels and it's a lot of fun. It's very easy to hide behind those guys when the fans are around. I try not to think about it too much - just want to get my job done. It's all I can do.

Have you received any advice from players such as Hamels and Lee?

Yeah, I think you learn a lot more from watching than opening up your mouth. I try to just pay attention and watch the way they go about their business. Most importantly, how they are mechanically on the mound and also their demeanor. It's been a learning process in regards to watching these guys. It's a lot of fun watching them.

You're working with a lot of catchers here this spring. How much do you enjoy working with them?

I think that I'm very fortunate to be working with catchers who are very talented defensively and offensively. These guys know the game inside and out. It's very beneficial to have a conversation with them and what I need to work on. These guys won't lie to me and are very honest. They'll tell me if I throw a good pitch or a bad one. Having guys like them behind the plate makes a huge difference.

Do you have a favorite spot you like to go to while you're down here in Clearwater?

I think you can never go wrong with Frenchy's. It's one of Clearwater's finest and definitely a staple here in town. It's a great spot with a lot of great food, people and atmosphere. Clear Sky Beachside Cafe is another really good spot. It's a nice little cafe' and restaurant. Overall, the whole beach atmosphere is great. It's frustrating to get there with the traffic but know matter what time of day you're going to see a long line of cars and angry people. Once you get there it's a lot of fun.
