Norfolk doubled up by Knights in opener

Parmelee homers in Tides debut
April 9, 2015

Chris Parmelee homered and Henry Urrutia reached base three times but Charlotte connected on six extra-base hits in a 6-3 win over the Tides Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Parmelee, making his first regular season appearance outside of the Minnesota organization, connected on a solo shot on the first pitch he saw as he gave Norfolk a 1-0 first inning lead.

Norfolk starter Tyler Wilson (0-1) struck out the side in the first inning before running into trouble in the second and third frames. The 25-year-old struck out seven while walking just one but yielded home runs to Engel Beltre and Matt Davidson as he allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Steve Johnson followed Wilson and struck out four in 2.0 innings of relief, giving him 237 punchouts in his Norfolk career. The 237 strikeouts are now the second-most for a Tides pitcher since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate, as Johnson moved past Jake Arrieta (234) and now only trails Chris Tillman (339) on the career strikeouts list.

Urrutia singled twice, walked and scored a run to pace Norfolk's seven-hit attack. Nolan Reimold added an RBI single, a walk and a stolen base, while Christian Walker added a double and a run scored

Veteran right-hander Brad Penny (1-0) earned the victory after holding the Tides to three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Penny, a two-time MLB All-Star, walked two and struck out two while throwing 52 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

Arcenio Leon followed Penny with 1.2 innings of shutout relief before giving way to a pair of former Tides, as Zach Phillips and Jairo Asencio combined to register the final five outs of the contest.

With the loss, Norfolk dropped its season opener for the eighth consecutive season. The Tides have not started a season 1-0 since 2007, when they knocked off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7-5 to open the season.

The Tides and Knights continue their opening series on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark, with first pitch set for 7:05. Right-hander Mike Wright will make the start for the Tides against right-hander Chris Beck. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.1 and watched online via MiLB.tv.
