Homers in 9th, 10th give Greenville 4-3 win over Legends

April 20, 2015

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Michael Chavis' leadoff home run in the top of the 10th inning provided the winning margin as the Greenville Drive took a 4-3 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night.

Alfredo Escalera hit two home runs for Lexington, and drove in all three of the Legends' runs.

Greenville took the early lead with single runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Mauricio Dubon and Jordan Procyshen walked with one out, and Nick Longhi's single scored Dubon from second.   Joseph Monge led off the second with a single and moved to second on a single by Derek Miller. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance to second and third, and Monge scored on a wild pitch.

Escalera hit a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game, and homered again with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to put the Legends ahead 3-2. But Dubon led off the ninth with a home run to tie the game again, leading to Chavis' go-ahead shot in the 10th.

Kuehl McEachern (2-0), who entered the game in the ninth inning, got the win. Torey Deshazier (1-1), who relieved starter Pedro

Fernandez with two outs in the top of the fifth and pitched the rest of the game, took the loss. He and Fernandez combined for 11 strikeouts, six by Deshazier.

Chandler Shepherd, who pitched for the University of Kentucky and Lawrence County High School in Louisa, worked two innings for Greenville. He gave up one hit, the eighth-inning home run by Escalera. Shepherd struck out two batters and walked none.

The series continues Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Transylvania and Mt. St. Joseph will meet in a college baseball game Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
