Nash Blast Lifts Hooks

May 11, 2015

SAN ANTONIO - Telvin Nash belted a two-run home run in the sixth inning Monday afternoon, sending Corpus Christi to a 2-1 win over San Antonio at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Despite the home run, pitching and defense carried the day.

Chris Devenski (3-0) kept the Missions off the scoreboard for the first four frames. With two away in the fifth, Travis Jankowski belted a home run to right field. Jankowski's first blast of the year put San Antonio up 1-0 and ended Devenski's scoreless innings streak at 27.

Missions starter Justin Hancock tossed five scoreless innings before giving way to Luis De La Cruz in the sixth.

De La Cruz (0-2) promptly permitted a lead-off base hit to Tyler Heineman. Nash was next and, under a heavy rain, lifted a 1-2 pitch over the left-field fence.

Travis Ballew relieved Devenski in the home half with one on and two away. Ballew yielded a single to Alberth Martinez but induced a line out to right to end the inning.

Mitch Lambson stranded two more in the seventh before Jandel Gustave worked the final two frames for the save.

Gustave was aided by a pair of double plays. In the ninth, Leo Heras caught a fly ball in left from Luis Domoromo for the second out. Heras, thanks to a quick relay by Jio Mier, doubled off pinch-runner Tyson Gillies at first to end the game.

It was Heras' second outfield assist of the afternoon. He gunned down Casey McElroy at home plate to end the fourth.

The series concludes Tuesday evening. San Antonio sends Colin Rea (1-1, 1.29) to the hill. Corpus Christi counters with Mike Hauschild (3-1, 4.18) and Lance McCullers (2-1, 0.72).
